We’ve all been there. You know you are capable of so much, and deep down, you know that you once dreamed of being where you are today. But somehow, it doesn’t feel like enough. Something inside you is holding you back, and you don’t know how to stop it. You’re stuck against your upper limit, your next ceiling… and it’s time to break through. But how?
It doesn’t matter how successful you are or how much you’ve accomplished—when you aren’t showing up at your highest potential, nothing else matters. You can’t enjoy the good things, being present is more difficult, and all your focus is directed at the problem—you.
So how do we turn that around?
After working with hundreds of high-achieving clients, I’ve learned the answer is simpler than you might imagine.
When we are stuck against our own upper limit, there are two things we need to check: our nervous system and our urgency. Let me explain…
Regulating the Nervous System
Your nervous system is where the root of your self-sabotaging patterns lies. When the goal you’re working toward triggers a sense of danger deep in your mind and body, your nervous system will do everything it can to prevent you from taking action toward that goal in order to protect you.
To stop self-sabotaging, you must address the lack of regulation in your nervous system at the deepest level.
Start by asking yourself: What about your goal scares you? Do you believe you are good enough to achieve it, or does it feel too good to be true? Do any of the steps required to reach your goal intimidate you? What emotions arise when you work toward it?
These questions will help you bring awareness to the lack of regulation in your nervous system, uncovering the root of what’s keeping you stuck.
To truly HEAL this, be discerning. Many tools, like meditation or deep belly breathing, can help you calm down in the moment, but they rarely regulate your nervous system in a way that combats self-sabotage. To heal a pattern at its root, you need to dive deep—this could look like somatic work, conscious connected breathwork sessions, or various forms of coaching or therapy.
Create Urgency
Once you’ve regulated your nervous system, you need a certain level of hunger and fire to break through your ceiling.
Most of us think we want the things we are working toward, but in reality, we often take action only when we dislike our current situation enough. This is obviously not ideal!
I know you don’t want to wait until things get worse before taking action, so I recommend shifting your mindset.
Take a few minutes and ask yourself:
- What if I didn’t have unlimited time? If I HAD to make this goal happen within six months (or even a year), or else give up on it, how would that feel?
- What if I found out it was never going to happen? What emotions would that bring up?
- Why do I want this goal? Why do I want it so badly that I’m unwilling to wait?
These questions can help you recognize that you may be taking the time you have for granted. You might not be showing up to your fullest potential or appreciating the time available to you. When we step into deep reverence and awe for the fact that our time is precious, it can spark the urgency and hunger needed to show up with passion.
Regardless of where you are, not showing up to your fullest potential is the worst. You can’t just hope that one day you’ll wake up and everything will be different. YOU have to take control and make the changes you need—NOW.
